What are the Ranger licensing/unlocking models?

We have two Ranger licensing/unlocking models.  Ranger in installed by the check scanning application's installation script in all cases.

1. When Ranger ships with the scanner (as with Canon), the Ranger license does not need to be unlocked.  A Ranger license was purchased for each scanner that shipped from the factory.

2. When Ranger does not ship with the scanner, software vendors unlock their Ranger licenses remotely by following the directions in this post:
